LG Optimus 2X goes on sale in Korea, teases white version for February

No big surprises here, unless you count that snowy white number up above. Yep, LG's not only stolen a march on Motorola in introducing the world's first dual-core smartphone, it's also about to beat Apple to the white handset punch as well. The 1080p-recording, Tegra 2-wielding Optimus 2X is now available in its home market of South Korea and, if LG stays true to its roadmap, should be filtering through into Europe before this month is out. We don't know if its white variant will ever escape the clutches of Korea (and we sure hope it does), but it should be making its bodacious debut over there in February.

Grace Digital punts WiFi radio into a wireless bookshelf speaker system, can't escape Reciva's ghost

Just when we thought Grace Digital Audio had turned over a new, touch-friendly leaf, the company's back with another WiFi internet radio that uses the frustrating Reciva interface. We can't say we're pleased, but the firm's new $250 Wireless Stereo Micro System does have one new feature that might be worth checking out -- it comes with a pair of handsome bookshelf speakers that connect over the ether as well. This time, you can not only connect to your home wireless network (or auxiliary media player) and pull down loads of tunes from the typical array of services -- including Pandora, Live365 and Sirius XM -- but listen in stereo too, while hopefully hiding that ugly four-line LCD and its irksome nests of menus from ever disturbing your view.

BMW working on electric 5-series sedan for China, we still can't get a diesel

BMW working on electric 5-series sedan for China, we still can't get a diesel
Surely it'll come elsewhere eventually, but for now an electric version of BMW's generously proportioned 5-series sedan looks destined exclusively for China. As part of the company's partnership with Brilliance China Automotive, BMW Brilliance Automotive is planning to create a pure EV 5-series and to show it off this year -- at some point. No further details are known about the car, though we're quite sure why this is happening. EVs are becoming more and more popular there as China struggles to shrug off a massive foreign oil dependency and BMW saw a similarly massive 87 percent jump in growth of its sales in China in 2010. So, there's your motive, but we'll still have to wait a bit for the rest of the details.

Samsung Forte is the SCH-R910, brings TouchWiz LTE action to MetroPCS (video)

Look familiar? You've actually seen it twice before, once as a QWERTY slider and once as an unidentified LTE smartphone. Well, it just so happens that a new batch of eighteen pictures have surfaced, and the two phones are are actually one -- this is the Samsung Forte for MetroPCS, which is presently running a recent build of Android 2.2.1. While we still don't know if it's got the 1GHz processor and 5 megapixel camera that lovingly accompanied the original rumor, it appears to have Samsung's custom TouchWiz UI on board, lending extra credence to the possibility that the handset might receive Galaxy S branding when it materializes in stores. We've got just one last note here, and that's this whole reveal feels rather... planted to us. Watch the video after the break to see what we mean, and find plenty more pictures at the link below.

Scientists Crack Genetic Code for Rare Cancer That Beset Steve Jobs

Johns Hopkins University scientists have deciphered the genetic code for a rare type of pancreatic cancer -- neuroendocrine or islet cell tumor -- that Apple CEO Steve Jobs told the world he'd been diagnosed with back in 2004. The discovery explains many of the cancer's troubling, highly variable properties and suggests new treatment approaches.

There's a lot to pull out of this chart. Like, are AT&T's abysmal Android numbers compared to other carriers solely due to the iPhone? The bigger takeaway, maybe, is that there's a lotta people left to be converted to smartphones.* More »

Mobile broadband shocker: AT&T looking at tiered data pricing and speeds for upcoming LTE service

We all know AT&T just loves its tiered pricing models, so it's no surprise to hear that the carrier intends to turn its forthcoming LTE service into a tier-vana of great new sophistication. BGR has come across an internal document detailing how AT&T plans to segment its 4G pricing on the basis of both speed and data allowance, meaning that your price will reflect both the amount of data you consume and the rate at which you gobble it down. To add further complexity flexibility, Top Ups will be available that'll allow users to amp up their connection speed for a limited time or increase their allowance on a per-month basis. We're hearing trials of this new offering will commence in May, which fits in neatly with the currently planned LTE rollout in the second half of this year. So it's not all set in stone yet, but irrespective of the number of data options AT&T throws our way, the paramount question will always be the same: how much?

JTT's Chobi Cam One 'micro DSLR' is sure to meet your micro expectations

Japanese retailer JTT has already proven itself to be a fan of tiny cameras, but it's truly outdone itself with its latest offering: the Chobi Cam One. At last you'll be able to carry a DSLR in your pocket, with only some minor trade-offs in things like image quality, features, and usefulness. You can swap in your choice of three different magnetically-attached lenses, though -- and while you won't exactly get great pictures or video from the thing, you can at least store a lot of them thanks to the camera's microSD card slot. Look for the camera itself to set you back ¥9,800 (or about $118), with extra lenses running between $30 and $60 (bundles are also available).

Congress to broadcast opening day live on Facebook, later today

congress
Today the U.S. House of Representatives will be transitioning over to Republican control. To mark the event, the first speech by new House Speaker, congressman John Boehner, will be streamed live on the Pledge to America Facebook page.

You will be able to watch the proceedings live even if you don't have a Facebook account - the page is open and accessible to all, as befitting a democracy. Still, if for some reason you simply don't like Facebook, you can watch the screencast itself on Livestream, which will be doing the heavy lifting on the video part (the Livestream video is embedded into the Facebook page).

If you do elect to watch the video on Facebook, you'll be able to comment on the page while it is happening, and take a more direct part in the democratic process (or at least make some noise about it).

Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal will ship with 2D version of Unity for older and weaker computers

Ubuntu Unity 2D!
It's amazing it took this long for Canonical to confirm, but it seems that Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal will ship with both a fancy, OpenGL-accelerated version of Unity, and a flatter, slightly more sedate 2D version for older, unaccelerated hardware. A couple more images of the 2D UI are available after the break.

Given the fact that one of the most common targets for Linux installations is on older, 'reclaimed' hardware, it would have been surprising if Ubuntu didn't ship with a 2D window manager. Canonical's Bill Filler also mentions that "many ARM platforms fall into this category," though we're not quite sure which ARM devices he has in mind. Most low-power devices are either netbooks or smartphones -- and netbooks are Atom x86, not ARM (at least for now), and a lot of smartphones have hardware acceleration via OpenGL ES (and who puts Ubuntu on a smartphone, anyway?)

Basically, this is great news for people that want to put Ubuntu 11.04 on old laptops, netbooks and desktops with awful integrated graphics -- or simply those that don't like the 3D version of Unity! It's also great news for those that virtualize their Ubuntu installations under VMWare or VirtualBox, both of which have a hard time with 3D acceleration.

[It seems, at the time of publishing, that Bill Filler's blog post has vanished. Maybe he was jumping the gun; or perhaps something else is afoot...]

Wine 1.3.11 released, improves JavaScript performance and localization, fixes MS Hearts bug

Wine HQ logoThe development version of Wine 1.3 has just been released, bringing with it a ton of bug fixes, improved JavaScript performance, and -- at long last -- GNU gettext support, making localization and translation a whole lot easier.

For many Linux users, though, Wine 1.3.11 will be known as the build that finally fixed MS Hearts, which has been broken under Wine since 2006. Of course, there is a Hearts clone, but it just isn't the same. The improved JavaScript performance means that JavaScript-heavy pages should run a bit better in Internet Explorer -- though why a Linux user would use Internet Explorer is truly a puzzler.

Binary packages for Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora and other major distros should be available; but if not, you can always build from source.

Auspex is a free text replacement app for Windows with tons of potential

Finding a really good free text replacement/expander app for Windows isn't an easy task. Yes, AutoHotKey is an excellent program, but it's not a good fit for people who don't enjoy hacking plain text configuration files. Breevy is an extremely nice GUI app, but it's shareware. Auspex -- developed as part of NANY 2011 at Donationcoder -- might be the free program we've been waiting for.

The Auspex interface makes it easy to add new text replacement strings. Give your entry a name, a mnemonic (the text that will be expanded -- ms in my example), select a trigger, and add your replacement text. You can also set up a list of applications you want to monitor or ignore so that Auspex doesn't kick in when you don't want it to. Autocompletion (and a fair sized dictionary) is built-in as well, and you can control everything from how soon suggestions are made, to the colors used in the pop-up boxes -- just press tab to complete a word.

One fun feature of Auspex is its "odometer." As you use your text replacements, Auspex will keep tabs on the number of characters you've saved. There's also a wizard for creating new entries, though it's a bit of a work-in-progress at the moment. True text manipulation wizards will appreciate the fact that Auspex supports regular expressions, which enables you to create complex text replacement schemes.

LauncherPro for Android updated, brings fancy home screen transitions (video)

LauncherPro, the fan-favorite Android home screen replacement, has been updated! This is not the much-hyped complete rewrite of the codebase -- that's coming soon! -- but it does bring one of the most-requested features: home screen transitions.

Rather than tell you all about them, we've made a video that shows off the four new Compiz-like transitions -- it's embedded after the break. Suffice it to say, they're very, very sexy. And elastic-y. The other thing this update ushers in is even smoother app drawer scrolling, which is also shown in the video (though it really is hard to say, objectively, whether it's smoother than before!)

You can download LauncherPro from AppBrain, or scan the QR code after the break.

Help save the earth in Survivosaur -- Time Waster

survivosaur
Everybody knows how the dinosaurs became extinct - you know, the big meteor and everything. But did it really have to happen? How would things have gone had you been there, dressed up as a huge dinosaur with a jet-pack and all sorts of projectiles, ready to save the day? Great question, and that's exactly what Survivosaur strives to answer.

The jet-pack is only the beginning here - you, the dino-protagonist, are tricked out to the max with alternative weapons, an optional shield, extra health and more. You use this massive arsenal to shoot at oncoming meteors and explode them in space, thus preventing the extinction of yourself and your kind. But not everything that comes from space is bad - you get bonuses (those little dollars flying in the screenshots), as well as health packs.

Once you amass enough lucre (say, $10), you can hit SPACE and access the in-game accessory store, where you get all of those fancy power-ups I just mentioned. Gameplay is super-simple - you run (or rather, circle the globe) with the arrow keys, and aim and fire with the mouse. But thanks to the power-up system, this game is surprisingly engaging.
